The WITS Foundation is inviting schools across Canada to join a fully supported pilot that empowers young people to lead positive change in their communities. Older students (ages 11 to 15) mentor younger students (ages 7 to 11) through creative, hands-on experiences that build empathy, leadership, and a genuine sense of belonging.
This project is designed to reduce discrimination of all kinds in settings where children gather. WAIS to Belong is based on four actions when engaging others: Welcome, Accept, Include, Share.
When children and youth practice these actions when encountering or re-encountering someone unfamiliar to them, both develop a sense of belonging. As opposed to being ridiculed or excluded, they are invited to be a part of the community.
In 2026-2027, most scenarios involve older students mentoring younger students, school to school. Older students learn the WAIS principles and develop creative means of teaching them to younger students. Then, both groups make meaningful changes that encourage belonging in their school and/or community.
Older students design and deliver inclusion workshops to younger peers. They develop leadership skills, deepen their own understanding of belonging, and become visible role models in their school community.
Younger students take part in workshops led by their older peers, then create their own community action projects. Murals, campaigns, skits, peer mentoring, the format is theirs to shape.
These age groups are flexible. In some cases, K+ schools participate on their own. Contact us for more details.
WAIS to Belong was built in collaboration with educators, Indigenous knowledge holders, subject matter experts, and youth advisory groups across Canada. The result is a structured mentorship experience that gives students the tools to recognize discrimination, celebrate diversity, and take meaningful action together.
We provide the training, materials, and ongoing support. Educators guide the process and watch their students thrive. No cost to your school. The rewards for your students, staff, and community are extraordinary.
